Treatment Philosophy

The providers at Coastal Vascular Institute are committed to treating you, the patient with surgical interventions serving as one but often not the first treatment tools.

First and foremost, you the patient have a right to receive education of your vascular condition and we consider this our responsibility as your provider. Lifestyles have a significant influence on vascular disease. What you as a patient do is important. Our team is dedicated to empowering you as the more you know, the more you can manage and control your vascular disease.

Secondly, a majority of care needed and provided by our team is medical, non-surgical care. The comprehensive management of vascular diseases requires a commitment to helping patients live a healthier lifestyle and better manage conditions that advance vascular disease. Medical management includes smoking cessation, cholesterol and blood pressure management, anti-coagulation, heart healthy diet habits, supervised exercise therapy, strategies to control lower extremity swelling, wound treatment and prevention, and others.

To be sure, when combined with patient education these measures alone allow for a strong patient-physician team that often by itself is a success. When necessary these efforts can be combined with minimally invasive techniques (often office based) and finally surgical interventions can be recommended if necessary.

Patients are made aware, that even when surgical interventions are required, careful attention to lifestyle and dedicated oversight by the Providers of your vascular medical conditions continue to keep you healthy and discourage the need for subsequent interventions. While we consider ourselves surgeons, it is no longer enough to just operate – our specialty has evolved, and our team is totally committed to your overall vascular care, both medical and surgical.
